A very sweet update on Maple (Now Lacy!)

Just wanted to write up a quick update on little Maple. To begin, I renamed her “Lacy” to reflect her little white tuft on her neck and chest. She’s been such a joy and a stupendous neighbor to her fellow dogs and humans nearby. She’s quite popular at the dog park and is very responsive to meeting new dogs. We went on a nice hike yesterday at Red Rock and she was so thrilled by the new smells and sights.
She sleeps comfortably (oftentimes in seemingly uncomfortable dog positions) and loves her endless supply of cozy places within my home.
I want to thank you all for your open nature at Mayte’s. I sincerely believe that the environment had provided her the confidence she needs in both humans and other animals. She’s a true joy and I’m so happy to be a part of her life. I remember when I first met her Downtown Summerlin when she jolted off her leash to greet me.
She’ll check in regularly for baths and some day care!
Please FWD to the rest of the team.
Best,
Marshall + Lacy

COCO

Deciding to get a dog involved a lot of discussion. Aside from the dedication and attention it requires, there were some conditions that would have to be for any new addition to our family. I have sensitivity to some animals so it would need to be a dog with hair and not fur. We also wanted a small dog because we currently have a cat and didn’t want to bring in another pet that would be bigger than her. Those two conditions alone narrowed the field down considerably.

We let Mayte know what we had in mind and she agreed to let us know when she had a dog that met our needs. Not too long after she sent us information on a 6 year old Yorkie who she called Bella (we later named Coco). To the best of her knowledge, Coco had been in a puppy mill, having several litters, abused and had her back right leg severely injured at some point. Although it doesn’t seem to hurt her now, it healed straight. We lovingly call it her “wooden leg”. Watching the initial videos from Mayte, we wondered about how well she would be able to get around. As the days went by, Coco made improvement and we were encouraged.

I had some work out in California and made arrangements to drive over to Las Vegas to pick up Coco the day before I was scheduled to fly back to Birmingham. I met Mayte at her new facility on a Thursday evening. We went to where Coco was waiting and started the introduction process. I had Angela and Ava on FaceTime to share the experience. Mayte showed me around the shelter and she told us about how it was going to be set up. She took time to make sure that Coco and I were comfortable enough with each other to head out – a little over an hour total. Coco and I made our way back to San Clemente, a four hour drive. Coco slept in her carrier as I drove, but keeping one hand on her to get her used to me. That has been a slow process for the two of us. We have made the assumption that whoever abused Coco were most likely males as she is way more nervous around men than women. But we are getting there.

Once we made it home, Angela stayed up all night with Coco. They have become inseparable. Coco is her little shadow. She has made incredible improvements in her overall health, demeanor, and activity, she is even learning to follow Angela’s commands of sit, come, lay, etc. We send Mayte videos of her progress of how much she has changed since when she first got her. Adopting from Mayte’s Rescue was and continues to be a wonderful experience. We feel like extended family now, thanks to Coco’s Auntie Mayte.

Love,

Angela, Drew & Ava
